The birth of baby R, London.
Last November I was fortunate to be able to travel to London to support my youngest sister in the birth of her first baby. I was also there for the birth of my middle sister’s first baby.. but I was 21 then. And I didn’t appreciate how anyone could contemplate having a baby. How selfish I was back then – though I’m so grateful to have been there!
Luckily for my little sister, I’d grown up a bit in between. And found out that having a couple of babies myself was worth the effort. My husband willingly watched our two while I took off to London, hoping their baby would arrive in the five day window I was there.
And miracle of miracles their baby girl did arrive then. I was also able to do a maternity session (while reeling from 24+ hours of no sleep and jet lag, a creative challenge) before her birth and a Fresh 48 session two days after the birth.
I thought I couldn’t love birth photography any more. But photographing my sister, while also providing labor support was kind of the bee knees. And I found a new passion – Fresh 48 sessions. My sister and her husband sat on the couch in their lounge room while nursing and cuddling their new bub and I photographed their love naturally (without posing) as it unfolded before me. Completely and utterly divine.
Kylie’s labor and birth went unbelievably well. She was so strong and determined throughout her labor. Of course, we wouldn’t be sisters if we didn’t annoy one another at some point during it! But we got over it quickly. And it was completely an honor for me to photograph her, her husband and my Mum as we all supported the birth of baby R. And what a little beauty she is. As I write from Salt Lake City now, I wish we lived closer and our kids and her and I could spend bucket loads of time together!
Here are some highlights of the 3 sessions I photographed of these three beautiful gingers.
These are gorgeous! How wonderful you were able to document the whole story!
Thank you Shannon! Yes, I almost can’t believe I was able to get their whole story for them, either.
